Caterpillars (worm)

Caterpillars (worm)Plant injury is caused only by the larval (worm) stages. Larvae are chewing insects and can eat entire leaves and flowers, bore into stems and roll/tie leaves. Nearly all parts of the plant can be infested. Cutworm larvae may be in the growing media or beneath pots.

Lepidoptera developmental stages are egg, larva (number of instars depends on the species), pupa, adult (moth). Development from egg to adult is about 30 days, but varies depending upon the species and temperature. Plants high in nitrogen may be more heavily damaged.
